The American Bar Association’s Washington DC Governmental Affairs Office seeks a bright, energetic attorney to advocate on behalf of the ABA before Congress and other governmental entities on issues of importance to the legal profession. The Legislative Counsel will devise and execute lobbying strategies for the effective implementation of ABA policies; analyze legislation and proposed regulations; draft advocacy documents to Congress and other governmental bodies; engage in legal research and writing; and provide legislative advice to ABA entities and other advocacy organizations.
A law degree and five years of legal experience that includes three years as a federal lobbyist or working with or for Congress or Executive Branch agencies on legislative policy are required. Experience working on a variety of legal issues is desirable. Top candidates will have excellent written and oral communication skills, a professional demeanor, a demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment, and a team orientation. Starting salary in the mid-to-high 80s.
