Policy Analyst, Government Relations Division
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards seeks a policy analyst to study and report on federal and state policies and practices that affect teacher effectiveness and development. Innovative thinkers and strong writers welcome. Expect to assist the Director of Government Relations and the Director of State Policy and Outreach in tracking and analyzing new legislation and regulations; preparing for Congressional, Administration, and state meetings; and becoming part of a growing and vibrant team of colleagues focused on building teaching into a true profession and using the skill and knowledge of accomplished teachers to advance student learning and school reform.
- Analyze federal and state laws and pending legislation;
- Write reports, issue briefs, and memoranda on federal and state policy;
- Prepare relevant materials and background information for staff meetings with Congressional, Administration, and state officials;
- Assist the Government Relations team in conducting Congressional briefings and state policy summits;
- Identify and collect information on best practices; trends in federal and state policy making and current research on issues related to teacher effectiveness and development;
- Co-author and author issue briefs, reports, and support documents for federal and state policymakers;
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously and sometimes, independently. Project management responsibilities include: adhering to internal and external timelines and ensuring the completion of high-quality deliverables;
- Regularly update relevant National Board federal and state policy website pages.
- Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree is preferred;
- Strong research, analytical, writing, and communication skills;
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with established deadlines;
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
- Strong interest in federal and state policy making;
- Experience on Capitol Hill or in an education policy setting highly desirable.
- Substantive knowledge and understanding of education and teacher effectiveness policy;
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment;
- Commitment to the organization’s mission and goals; and
- Competency in the use of relevant software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
