Executive Director, Shelter House, Inc


Shelter House seeks an Executive Director to lead the organization to and through its next phase in ending homelessness and domestic abuse in Fairfax County. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for Shelter House’s $4M budget, 60 full-time and 50-part time staff, programs, and execution of its mission. S/he will ensure that Shelter House’s fiscal, operations, fundraising, marketing, human resource, and programmatic strategies are effectively implemented across all segments of the organization.

This is a unique opportunity for a visionary leader to make a deep and lasting impact on homelessness and domestic violence in Fairfax county with support from a diverse and engaged board of directors, the community and Fairfax County.


Strategic Vision and Leadership:
– Collaborate with the Board to refine and implement the strategic plan while ensuring that the budget, staff, and priorities are aligned with Shelter House’s core mission
– Provide inspirational leadership and direction across the organization, and ensure the continued development and management of a professional and efficient organization; establish effective decision-making processes that will enable Shelter House to achieve its long- and short-term goals and objectives
– Cultivate a strong and transparent working relationship with the Board and ensure open communication

Leadership & Management:
– Ensure ongoing local programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality across the organization
– Actively engage and energize Shelter House’s key stakeholder groups
– Lead, coach, develop, and retain Shelter House’s high-performing senior management team
– Ensure effective systems to track progress, and regularly evaluate program components

Development & Communications:
– Ensure that the flow of funds permits Shelter House to make continuous progress towards the achievement of its mission
– Formulate and execute comprehensive marketing, branding and development strategies that will ensure consistency throughout the organization
– Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities

Strengthening Infrastructure and Operations:
– Ensure the delivery of high quality services while managing for current and future growth
– Support and motivate the organization’s staff
– Oversee the financial status of the organization including developing long and short range financial plans, monitoring the budget and ensuring sound financial controls are in place

The Executive Director will be thoroughly committed to Shelter House’s mission. Concrete demonstrable experience and other qualifications include:
– Minimum of a BA, ideally with an MBA, MPA or related advanced degree, with at least 10 years of senior management/leadership experience
– Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performing teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget
– Prior nonprofit experience ideal, preferably working in local homeless and/or domestic violence prevention or response programs
– Established professional relationships within Fairfax County, including at county level as well as in the public and private sectors
– Past success working with a board of directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships
– Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
– Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning
– Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
– Collaborative, passionate, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed
– Managing with a vision and purpose

Shelter House, Inc. is a community-based, non-profit organization serving homeless families in Fairfax County, Virginia. Our organization was formed in 1981, when several ecumenical groups came together to better serve Fairfax County’s low-income population. In 1985, Shelter House’s facility was moved to its current location in Falls Church. In 2007, Shelter House was awarded Fairfax County’s contract to operate the Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter in Fairfax. In 2010, Shelter House became the first non-profit to operate Artemis House, Fairfax County’s Domestic Violence Shelter.

Compensation is commensurate with experience and includes health benefits.
