The Communications Specialist is responsible for executing a variety of communications tactics, including generating media coverage, drafting press releases and other campaign material, managing the organization’s websites and social media platforms, drafting and circulating regular e-newsletters and other materials such as position papers. The Communications Specialist should understand how grass roots organizing, media/communications and other strategies and tactics fit into the context of an advocacy campaign at both the federal and state level. Finally, the Communications Specialist must have the ability to travel at least 20% to lead local press campaigns in targeted states/districts.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Generate press coverage for issue campaign and national spokesperson/advocates
• Create materials for distribution to the press
• Work with national/local press
• Lead all local press/media efforts in targeted states/districts
• Prepare senior staff/advocates for press interviews
• Work with senior staff to develop issue papers
• Maintain databases and draft e-newsletters
• Create PowerPoint presentations for organization
• Maintain organization’s websites and lead development of projects and online strategy
• Develop new website features for specific campaigns
• Generate social media campaign
Desired Experience and Skills:
• An undergraduate degree is required
• 6-8 years experience in public relations/communications along with government affairs or similar political experience
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Preparation of press releases, issue papers, newsletters and social media
• Proven ability to generate press for issue campaign/individuals
• Strong computer skills, including PowerPoint
• Ability to write quickly and for deadline without sacrificing either substance or style
• Knowledge of the political process including demonstrated ability to target message
• Federal or State legislative experience a plus
