The Associate Director of State Outreach reports to the Sr. Director for Outreach. Candidates must be outgoing, results-oriented, have an excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines. Successful candidates will be creative, self-motivated, and have a strong understanding of market-oriented ideas. State government, Capitol Hill or policy-related experience and familiarity with basic economic principles are required.
Developing and executing effective outreach strategies that connect Mercatus research with state policy audiences;
Educating Mercatus researchers on the evolving context of policy debates and potential opportunities to advance the use of their research by state policy audiences;
Working with policy research, communications, marketing, and events teams to ensure that Mercatus research is effectively disseminated to state policy audiences;
Managing a state focused team of outreach specialists covering all Mercatus research areas;
Developing and strengthening effective relationships with state policy makers and staff so that Mercatus research informs and improves public policy;
Ensuring full compliance with Mercatus policies; and
Managing the State Outreach budget, strategies, and programs and providing regular updates and reporting.
5-7+ years of experience in public policy and/or related fields (legislative staff, think tanks, etc.).
Extensive knowledge of the policy making process with policy maker relationships at the federal and/or state level.
Understanding of the role of academic institutions, think tanks, and research centers in the policy making process.
Demonstrated background of working effectively in a bi-partisan or coalition-oriented manner.
Familiarity with some or all of Mercatus scholars’ policy research areas, ideally within Tax, Budget, Health Care, or Pension.
Desire to connect cutting edge research with today’s public policy challenges and an understanding of past Mercatus research.
Proven effective leadership experience managing projects and/or staff.
Excellent writing and public speaking capabilities. Experience managing email marketing campaigns.
Highly organized. Experience managing and maintaining a database and related reporting skills.
Ability to work well on a team and facilitate collaboration on projects with multiple stakeholders.
