The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) is the major national service organization for all small and mid-sized independent liberal arts colleges and universities in the U.S. Currently 650 institutions and 90 organizations are members. CIC’s 25-person staff, based in Washington, DC, serves its member institutions through conferences, externally funded projects, programs, services, and other activities designed to help institutions improve leadership expertise, educational programs, administrative and financial performance, and institutional visibility. As Staff Assistant to the President, this position provides full administrative support to the executive office and requires absolute confidentiality, precision, good judgment, speedy task execution, broad understanding of CIC activities and the president’s goals, and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. In addition, the incumbent works with the president and the chief of staff on preparation of materials and logistics for the meetings of the CIC Board of Directors. The position also supports the senior vice president in matters related to fundraising from foundations, including grant requests and report preparation. This responsibility requires subject matter research skills, ability to interpret program budgets, and tracking of all aspects of CIC’s relations with foundations. A broad skill set is required that includes excellent expository writing and effective oral communication abilities; a proactive, positive, and member-focused disposition; attention to detail; mature familiarity with Microsoft Office 2010 applications; ability to prioritize independently among competing priorities; and the inclination to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented work environment. A bachelor’s degree and some work experience (preferably in higher education or a related association) are required; experience at a CIC or similar college and university is preferred.
